A Better Answer

Steel Investment Castings - Lost Wax Castings - All Popular Metal Casting Alloys

A better answer has always been the goal of Shelmet Precision Casting. Usually the specialists at Shelmet would answer design dilemma question or even questions about the best type of alloy to cast. However, recently Shelmet’s experts have begun reaching out in other ways to members of the online community answering questions at Yahoo Answers.

Expertise shows and Shelmet’s responses have often received Best Answer. Here is a better answer collection:

“What are my options in the metal casting business?”

This question was asked by a young man who worked in a small foundery as a supervisor. He was concerned about the survival of the “melter of steel”, calling them a “dying breed”. He asked about his options for a successful future in the business.

The answer from Shelmet Precision Casting:

"I can sympathize with you. The economic cycle is once again on the down side. The sad truth is many foundries are having difficulty staying in business and others have completely shut down. As far as your success and a good future in the casting industry depends upon your skills and the foundry you are working with or will be working with. First of all skilled melters are not common and quality skilled melters are even less. If you are truly a skilled, quality-minded melter you should be able to stay gainfully employed.

The second issue is the foundry you are or will be working with. Shelmet Precision Casting has been in business since 1960. We have survived 4 recessions and never laid an employee off. The question should be “why are some foundries successful and others are not?”

Our belief is everything goes full circle. Take care of the customer and they will take care of you. Take care of the employee and the employee will take care of the business. Basically look for a business where the owners and management serve the customer and employee. The key word is serving."

Does the silicon used in stainless steel, cast iron, and carbon steel use aluminum in the process?

This was another question presented on Yahoo Answers, possibly by a student.

The answer from Shelmet Precision Casting:

“Silicon, in the form of ferro-silicon, is produced from the reduction of silica with carbon (coke). The aluminum content of silicon thus depends on the purity of the silica. Ferro-silicon and metallic silicon do contain aluminum, with the lowest grade specification limits at 0.5% max.”
