A boat propeller can be cast from a number of metals and alloys. There are some boat propellers that are constructed from cast iron that consists of a mixture carbon, silicon, manganese, sulfur, phosphorus, magnesium, nickel, copper, titanium and a number of other elements. Such propellers are frequently used on outboard motors and can be driven at speeds up to 9,000 revolutions per minute. Bronze, aluminum and stainless steel can also be cast for a boat propeller. Such propellers are used by ships, pleasure boats, cargo ships, ocean liners, tugs and trawlers for high speed and high efficiency. Casting foundries that specialize in boat propellers can cast up to a maximum diameter of almost 16.5 feet.
One method often used for casting a propeller is called the squeeze cast method. This produces a denser, smoother aluminum boat propeller that can be used in salt or fresh water environments. These boat propellers are finished with several layers of high-tech paint that ensures corrosion resistance and excellent performance. A boat propeller can have three, four and five blades. Technology has even shown that plastic can be used to create boat propellers. Aerodynamics and hydrodynamics in boat design, combined with speed prediction formulation and methods of propeller selection are now used to increase performance of the boat and propulsions systems.
Each outboard motor manufacturer has designed their boat propellers for specific features and strengths. The right propeller greatly influences a boat’s performance. For instance, a three-bladed propeller will perform faster than a four-bladed propeller. A boat propeller with more blades will have better acceleration and thrust, but be generally slower. No matter how many blades a propeller has, quality and performance will still rely on the precision casting process. Choose a casting company with a reputation for precision, an expert staff and customer service. For more information about a Boat Propeller |
