Aluminum Alloy Casting

Steel Investment Castings - Lost Wax Castings - All Popular Metal Casting Alloys

Aluminum alloy casting is the process of creating solid shapes from an aluminum alloy. Metal alloys have been around for a long time, but the precision casting methods used are frequently refined. Within a span of about two thousand years from around 5000 BC, mankind first learned how to extract and manipulate metals from heating copper ore - a natural combination of minerals. Today, this learning process has evolved into many alloys including one of the most useful metal alloys produced used in aluminum alloy casting.

Aluminum alloy casting uses a mixture of two or more ferrous and non-ferrous elements fused or dissolved into one metal alloy under extreme heat. In the case of aluminum alloy casting, these metallic elements are aluminum.

Liquefying these metals, pouring them into molds that are allowed to slowly cool, creates alloys. These metal alloys take on the distinctive shape of the mold that is the reverse shape of a precision tool and die design. In the lost wax investment casting method of creating aluminum metal castings, hot wax is injected into these tool and die designs to create patterns. The patterns are coated with a sand casting coating that will withstand 3000F in order to melt out the wax inside. What is left is the mold that receives the liquefied aluminum alloy.

Through the use of a mold, aluminum alloy casting allows us to mass-produce products used in the automobile parts industry for example. Parts you may expect to find from aluminum alloy casting are engine cylinder heads and valve covers. The results of aluminum alloy casting are different products shaped into various forms for a wide variety of uses.

Aluminum Alloy Casting and Art   - Not particularly exclusive to car manufacturers, some visual artists, who work with metal as their medium, employ aluminum alloy casting to create flat relief sculptures. Flat relief sculptures are works of art in which its shapes raise from its surrounding background.

To properly prepare for the creation of aluminum alloy casting products, manufacturers develop a product's design from a pattern, create a mold from that pattern, and then insert holes or tunnels into the mold with a core when necessary. After the heated metal is poured, cooled, and removed from the mold, the result is what's called, a "casting."

Aluminum Alloy Casting and Science — Aluminum alloy casting is the end product use of the science of metallurgy - the science of separating metals from their ores and preparing them for use through smelting and refining.
