Aluminum Investment Casting
Aluminum investment casting allows the production of fine mechanical parts, which require little machining or finishing touches. Aluminum investment casting can be used to produce parts as small as 0.40mm to 0.75 mm thick to bigger sizes. With advancements in technology and casting techniques, the thicknesses of casting walls are progressively decreasing. This ensures parts that are more functional and lightweight. Aluminum metal casting is used to produce aluminum alloy parts that demand fine detailing and complex shapes. Aluminum alloy parts now find applications in a variety of fields, from electrical components to jet engine parts. Aluminum-silicon-magnesium alloy castings are now able to produce even the most critically demanding high-end parts.
Lost Wax Metal Casting
The part or design to be created is first formed with wax. Multiple layers of slurry are applied to the wax model to get the desired thickness of the shell. The wax is then melted away, giving rise to the name "lost wax metal casting". The shell will be toughened with heat before the molten aluminum is poured into the hot shell. Pouring molten metal into a pre-heated shell also has the advantage of filling all of the detail's grooves and creases. The shell is removed and the casting is recovered.
This process can fabricate very high temperature-tolerant metal parts. This is a quality that cannot be produce using metal casting or plaster mold casting, and is difficult to produce by machining.
Return of an Ancient Art Form
Investment casting is actually the return of an ancient art form with modern applications. Egyptians and to a lesser extent the Chinese used this technique to make gold jewelry. Now you can see the application of this technology in a variety of fields, ranging from farming to military airplanes to rockets that cross the borders of the atmosphere.
Advantage Over Several Other Metals
Aluminum investment casting can produce high precision, fine detail casting parts. Aluminum alloys have an advantage over several other metals, with properties like corrosion resistance, malleability and being lightweight. It can produce parts with ultra thin walls, while not compromising on the strength. Aluminum's malleability is very similar to that of gold, allowing the metal to be beaten to any finesse. The warplanes of Germany and America first used aluminum investment casting parts during the Second World War. The high precision, fine detail, and strength of aluminum investment casting parts continue make them a necessity for military and commercial aircrafts.
No Further Machining
Aluminum investment casting provides a variety of parts, in all shapes and sizes with the finest details and a smooth finish that needs no further machining or polishing. The alloys 208.0, 295.0, 308.0, 355.0, 356.0, 443,0, 514.0, 535.0 and 712.0 are widely used for aluminum investment casting.
