A brass manifold is just one of the plumbing parts that are manufactured by a metal casting process. In general engineering a “manifold”, according to Wikipedia is: “in systems for moving fluids or gases is a junction of pipes or channels, typically bringing one into many or many into one.” In one case a brass manifold is what some call a “faucet splitter”. It’s that small metal (cheap ones may also be made out of plastic) device that is attached to an outdoor water faucet to turn one outlet into two outlets. This lets one attach two garden hoses to one faucet. They are not limited to 2 outlets; some might also be a “4-way”, enable the use of 4 hoses.
Another type of brass manifold might be used in a building, such as a hospital, to enable fluids or gasses to be distributed in several directions from a central point. For instance, instead of having an oxygen bottle a patient’s room, there is now an outlet in the wall. The oxygen arrives to that point thru a distribution system that starts with a manifold. Radiant flooring systems also use a type of metal manifold. This enables the hot water to flow thru a series of piping or tubing from a central point throughout the system, under the floor. The heat from the water then warms the floor, warming the house. For more information on Brass Manifold and investment casting. |
