Copper casting alloys are used in applications that demand high levels of corrosion resistance, higher thermal and/or electrical conductance. Copper objects are found in all shapes- rods, sheets, pipes, wires, foils, and castings. Copper supports easy welding and joining. When in contact with air, the copper surface forms a thin layer that protects the internal parts from corrosion. Bronze (copper and zinc) and brass (copper and tin plus aluminum or silica) are the two types of alloys of copper. There are a variety of copper alloys. Copper has been known to man for 10,000 years. In fact, 5,000 years ago, Egyptians found that mixing copper with other materials increased its malleability and the resultant copper blend could be cast into any shape. The durability of copper alloy casting is evident from the thousand-year-old bronze statues found from different parts of the world; archeologists have unearthed such artifacts from India, China, and Egypt. | |||||||||

Many Casting Techniques Use Copper Alloys It is only natural for the copper alloys to find applications in demanding industries. Though pure copper is difficult to cast, its alloys support the casting techniques like investment casting, sand-casting, and die-casting. Copper alloys, unlike pure copper allow different casting techniques. Beryllium, silicon, aluminum, nickel, tin, zinc, and chromium are the main elements which combine with copper to form copper alloys. There is endless scope for copper alloys that come in thousands of forms. Copper alloys are widely classified into three groups. The first group copper alloys freeze at around 50oC. The range of freezing temperature for second group alloys is between 50oC and 110oC and the third group alloys freeze at 110oC to 170oC. The range of copper alloys can provide a flexible solution for many applications. There is no dearth in the choice of copper casting alloys.

Options and Uses Are Endless The technique of casting durable structures with copper casting alloys has a long history and wide range of modern applications. Proper copper casting alloy can be selected to obtain the desirable quality like high strength, resistance to fatigue, pressure tightness or resistance to corrosion. The options are simply endless and the only necessity is to identify the demands of a specific application. |
