The Oldest Metal Casting Technique Copper investment casting is the oldest metal casting technique and was used in India, China and Egypt over 5,000 years ago. Pure copper doesn't support free casting, but when mixed with tin or lead it becomes easily cast-able. Egyptians discovered that even before they began building the pyramids. Ancient Egyptians used bee-wax to form the structure then covered it with clay. That was then placed into a fire to melt away the wax. The clay would harden with a cavity in the shape of the bee-wax model. The copper would then be melted and poured it into the cavity, which would later be recovered as a sculpture. |
