Exhaust Manifold Castings

At one time exhaust manifold castings were primarily cast iron. But now it is quite common to fine exhaust manifolds that have been cast from Stainless Steel 304 and are often mirror polished or even chromed.

The exhaust manifold is a combination of pipes that moves the exhaust cases from an internal combustion engine to the exhaust pipe. For those unfamiliar with engines the exhaust manifold are those jumble of pipes somewhat resembling the bent and flexed arms of an octopus.

Each vehicle manufacturer produces numerous internal combustion engines that are all different styles and sizes. This means that the exhaust manifolds are different styles and sizes also.

The exhaust manifold casting has holes that match the air holes in the cylinder head to which it is attached using manifold bolts. The gentle curves in the exhaust manifold pipes which are not equal lengths allow for easy passage of exhaust gases. A header which serves the same purpose as an exhaust manifold is different in that the pipes are all the same length.
