General Casting Questions

Investment Casting Markets - General Casting - Lost Wax Castings - All Popular Metal Casting Alloys

Isn’t investment casting tooling expensive?
What is the investment casting process?
What lead times can be expected in investment casting?
What surface finish can be expected from investment casting?
Why buy investment casting?

Q: Isn’t investment casting tooling expensive?

A: Traditionally, investment casting tooling required a significant upfront investment due to the cost of die design and fabrication. That is no longer true with the advancement of CAD/CAM and machining technologies. The amount of labor required to design and fabricate tooling has been drastically reduced through the integration of computer-driven technologies. Top

Q: What is the investment casting process?

A: The investment casting process refers to a metal casting process where a disposable wax model identical to the casting is produced from a tool. The wax model is then repeatedly dipped into liquid ceramic slurry, then covered with fine sands to form a layered mold. After the ceramic has dried, the disposable wax is burned out leaving a hollow cavity into which the metal is poured. To get a step by step tour, go to our metal casting process slide show on the investment casting process. Top

Q: What lead times can be expected in investment casting?

A: Six to eight weeks are typical lead times in investment casting. However, lead times can be modified based on the customer’s unique situation. Our customers tell us our service is exemplary. Once we understand your specific needs, we work to meet the response times you need. Top

Q: What surface finish can be expected from investment casting?

A: Excellent surface finish can be achieved in investment casting. Our typical casting finish is comparable to a matte finish Formica tabletop. In addition, we offer a wide variety of secondary finishing services: heat treating, machining, polishing, plating, anodizing and coating.

Q: Why buy investment casting?

A: The investment casting process offers many unique benefits, including freedom of design, reduced machining requirements and consistency.
  • Design Flexibility and Freedom:
The investment casting process allows the designer the flexibility of infinite alloy choices and great flexibility in external and internal configurations.
  • Reduced Machining:
Investment castings are produced to near-net size. There is little secondary machining, which yields time and material costs savings.
  • Consistency:
The investment casting process produces a reliable and consistent product time and again from part to part, as well as from batch to batch.
With the above benefits and other features such as close tolerance and excellent surface finish, the investment casting process outperforms other metal forming processes, and it presents a high overall value to the customer. Top
