Investment casting alloys were developed to provide properties that a pure metal could not provide. In fact, it is the development of certain alloys that have made certain industries possible. Without certain alloys would it have been possible to go to the moon? Probably not. The properties that are produced by the creation of certain alloys are a resistance to abrasion, acid, corrosion, heat and wear. Alloys also can be anti-galling, high hardness, high pressure, high tensile, non-magnetic and mercury free. All investment casting alloys have numeric or alphanumeric designations that are understood by all those in the industry. Here are some samples of investment casting alloys by their alphanumeric and numeric number. Carbon Steel – 1018, 1020, 1025, 1030, 1040 and 1045 Low Alloy Steel – 4130, 4140, 4340, 52100, 6150, 8620 and 9310 300 Stainless Steel – 302, 303, 304, 304L, 309, 310, 316, 316F and more 400 Stainless Steel – 410, 416, 420, 431, 440C, 440F and more Precipitation Hardened Stainless Steel – 15-5 and 17-4 Tool Steel – A-2, D-2, H-11, H-13, L-6, M-2, O-1, O-2, S-5 and S-7 Cobalt Base Alloy – Co3, Co3B, Co6, Co12, Co21, Co25 and Co31 Nickel Base Alloy – CW12MW, CW2M, CW6M, NI-Hard, NI-Resist and more Copper Base Alloy – C875 and C876 Learn more about precision casting alloys especially those ferrous and non-ferrous alloys that Shelmet Precision Castings pours.
