Investment casting equipment is the backbone of every metal casting process, be it large or small. Of course, if you are a small backyard lost wax casting operation you may not have a wax room, tool room or shell room, but the chances are that you have some of the same equipment as the larger operations only small sizes and quantities. Investment casting equipment can be divided into two categories, consumables and actual equipment. The equipment itself can be separated by location: wax room, shell room, foundry, finishing room and tool room. The consumables can be separated by type: waxes, refractories, binders, crucibles and metals. Investment Casting Equipment by Room:Wax Room - wax injection equipment, automated alignment systems, hydrogen torches, dispensing tanks, coating tanks and prototyping equipment. Shell Room – slurry mixers, tanks, dispersers, blowers, dust collection systems and viscometers Foundry – autoclave boilers, burnout furnaces, melting equipment, caustic leaching systems, abrasive blast equipment and water jets Finishing Room – abrasive cut-offs, friction saws and power grinders Tool Room – vertical and horizontal band saws Investment Casting Equipment by Type:Wax Room – pattern waxes, soluble waxes, specialty waxes, wax reclamation and recycling products, wax pattern cleaner and pattern wetting solution Refractories – fused silica, tabular alumina, fused brown alumina, alumina silicates, molochite, white alumina, sand & flours, zirconia, plaster, fiber enhanced refractories and carbon stucco Binders – binders, silica, gravity chart, wetting agents and other additives Crucibles – crucibles and pour cups Metals – scrap and copper, brass, steel, nickel, cobalt and other alloys Of course each casting company will have their own particular combinations of casting equipment, depending on the types of metals and alloys they specialize in and on whether their focus is investment casting, die casting, sand casting or other casting operations. Hopefully this brief overlook at the equipment used in investment casting will give you a better understanding of the complexity of metal casting.
