The investment casting manufacturer creates intricate metal products using a "lost-wax" or "investment casting" process. Using this process, the investment-casting can produce up to one thousand 4.5 to 6 pound (2 to 3 kilo) castings in one hour. The manufacturer starts by making a specially designed die. After the die is created, the manufacturer uses it to insert wax into a sprue according to the patterns determined by its design. After dipping this wax assembly into a ceramic substance (similar to the thickness of clay), the investment casting manufacturer covers the wax assembly with Zircon - a type of sand - to create what's called a "shell." When complete, the wax is removed - coining the procedure as a "lost"-wax process.
Finishing the Casing What's left is an impression for the formation of metal casings. Removing the shell through water blasting yields the desired casings. The manufacturer then removes the casings from the sprue by first dipping them in liquefied nitrogen and later breaking the parts off with a hammer, chisel, or saw. To finish the casing to a usable condition, the casting manufacturer grinds off excess residue.

The Casting Process Used by Artists This type of casting is "expendable mold casting" - casting that uses materials such as wax, shell, sand, and/or plastic to mold casings. Because these materials are temporary, non-reusable, and removed by the investment casting manufacturer after they are used, they are called expendable. It is very similar to the ancient method of the lost wax bronze-casting process used by fine artists and metalworkers. The other type of casting is called "non-expendable mold casting" and does not require mold destruction. |
