A Mercury outboard motor propeller is a product of metal casting. Whether it is made of aluminum or stainless steel, a three or four-blade propeller, one or two pieces, unless it’s made of plastic, it was produced by some type of metal-casting process.
Marine or boat propellers must pass the test for durability and performance. The number of blades and pitch are the design features which influence performance the most. Durability, on the other hand is a result of the metal and casting method employed in the creation of the propeller. Depending on the model and year of manufacture, the Mercury outboard motor propeller may be created by a new alloy, Mercalloy™366, developed by the Mercury Marine metallurgists. This alloy ensures that the propeller continues to perform correctly and survives an underwater encounter with an object like a stump or rock. This aspect of a marine propeller’s durability is known as “ductility”. A propeller’s ability to bend upon an encounter with an underwater object without breaking is a true measure of ductility. A propeller with good ductility is a valuable safety feature, ensuring that a boater will not be stranded and unable to reach shore due to a broken propeller. Besides being cast from one of Mercury’s special alloys a Mercury outboard motor propeller is subjected to vigorous testing. An impact test is conducted, as are peak load and deflection tests. The tests are conducted on unfinished and finished propellers. While Shelmet may not produce the Mercury outboard motor propeller, there are a number of other outboard marine parts that could very easily be part of their repertoire.
