The U.S. metal casting industry has been the world leader in production of cast products. The most recent figures indicate that industry sales in the U.S. are around $27 billion each year. As of 2000, there were almost 3,000 operating foundries located in all 50 states. These foundries employed approximately 250,000 people.

The casting industry supplies the following percentages of metal castings supply markets:

  • Gray Iron - 42%
  • Ductile Iron – 31%
  • Aluminum – 10%
  • Steel – 10%
  • Copper – 2%

The casting industry is also historically a good barometer of economic recovery. While it is one of the last to feel the chill of an economic cool down, it is one of the first to begin feeling the warmth as the economy heats up.
