Metal Die Casting

Steel Investment Castings - Lost Wax Castings - All Popular Metal Casting Alloys

The metal die casting process is an amazing sight to observe. One can watch as molten metal is poured into a mold and then later be amazed when the project is released from the mold. The item revealed can be a piece for the engine of a large plane, a small nozzle tip used in the food service industry, or even an intricate a work of art.

Metal casting has been practiced for millennia, and while it was originally fairly limited to jewelry and art, it is now a vital and growing industry, with applications in every type of industry possible. Many industries have come and gone over the years, but metal die casting is part of a strong industry whose products are in increasingly more demand.

Allows Creation of Large to Small Pieces

The process of metal die casting involves a molten metal or alloy being poured into a mold with an empty cavity in the shape of the cast design. The molten metal is left to cool and solidify and is then carefully released or broken out of the mold to reveal a piece in the exact shape and design of the prototype used to create the mold.

One form of metal die casting is investment casting. This is commonly referred to lost-wax casting in the art world and precision casting in the industrial community. Unlike some of the other casting processes, this form of casting process allows for the production of the most intricate and delicate pieces; forming and contouring around smallest designs.

Another form of investment casting is alloy casting. This process includes taking molten metal alloy, a blend of two or more metals or elements, and pouring the liquid metal into a mold that is made from sand, clay and water. This mold has been shaped to the desired configuration and when the molten alloy is poured into the cavity, it forms to the design. After the casting is released from the mold it is sandblasted to make a clean design.
