New vending machines as well as the old vending machines owe their existence to the art of investment casting. Years ago, most of the parts of vending machines were made of cast iron. These were often quite ornate, painted bright colors and used to sell anything from gumballs to soda pop. While the base, top and stand of older vending machines were metal, usually cast iron, new vending machines include more plastic. However, the coin mechanism is still created by some form of metal casting. This includes the cover plate and the knob that is turned to insert the coin into the machine.
Those machines, especially that dispense small pieces, will often have a metal cover over the dispensing spout. The purpose is to prevent the small pieces being dispensed from spilling out onto the floor. This cover is often made by investment casting. New vending machines, like their vending machine ancestors, all have some type of lock that protects the money that has been collected. Sometimes these locks are simple padlocks, other times they are barrel locks, cylinder locks, puck lock and T-handle locks. From coffee vending machines to gumball vending machines, soda vending machines to snack vending machines, investment casting makes them work. The vending machine stands are also usually made from cast iron, guaranteed to withstand little kids hanging onto the gumball machine without collapsing.
