Sewing Machine Parts

Sewing machine parts, no matter the make or model, are often produced by investment casting. From the earliest Singer sewing machines, when the entire body was cast from heavy cast iron, metal casting has been critical to the production of sewing machines.

Although most sewing machines now employ a lot of plastic, there are certain mechanical parts that must be cast. The use of plastic, especially in the cover of the body, does mean that a portable sewing machine really is portable. Even when sewing machine bodies were cast aluminum to make them lightweight and “portable”, those older sewing machines were still very heavy.

Below is a brief list of the sewing machine parts that are either completely made by some type of metal casting process or that have parts that are cast.

Parts for Sewing Machines

• Bobbin Case – while bobbins are often made from plastic, the bobbin cases are still made from metal.
• Bobbin Winding Mechanisms
• Foot Pedal
• Hand Wheel – on older machines the hand wheel were actually cast iron, however today they are made out of plastics, which just the inner gears or parts being made of metal.
• Slide Plate – covers the bobbin area and usually has measurement marks and sewing guides engraved on the surface.
• Presser Foot – there are many different types of presser feet designed to specific jobs.
• Presser Foot Lever – Once made from metal, now the lever itself may be made from plastic with the inner workings made from metal.

Whatever the name or function, sewing machine parts that need to be strong and durable will still be produced by metal casting; either investment casting, die casting or sand casting.
