Stainless steel alloy 304 is an austenitic chromium and nickel alloy; containing at least 18% chromium. It also contains 8% nickel and at most 0.08% carbon, making it what is more commonly known at an 18/8 stainless. For ease of forming and welding, plus resistance to corrosion and oxidation, stainless steel alloy 304 is ideal. It also is extremely tough and easily fabricated. The final product cleans easily and has an aesthetic that is both beautiful and functional. There are two variations of alloy 304; the low carbon 304L and the high carbon 304H. 304L is mostly used for components that are “heavy gauge” or over 6mm. Elevated temperatures in applications will usually call for the higher carbon grade 304H. Chances are that you have several items in your home, especially in your kitchen that are made from the SST-304. Most often used as containers and tanks for different solids and liquids, this alloy is especially suitable for application requiring sanitization. Some of the most common uses in the food industry are: beer, wine and milk production applications. Alloy 304 stainless steel is used in all aspects of dairy processing, homogenizing, sterilizing, storage and transportation. Breweries use pans, vats, pipes and storage containers made of the 304 alloy. The highly corrosive natural acids in citrus, vegetables, meats and other edibles have not impact on type 304 stainless. This is one reason it is highly prized for use in food production and processing, and in commercial and residential kitchens. Counter and table tops, appliances, cooking utensils, pots and pans and all manner of items used in and around food are made from this alloy. Many types of liquid transportation containers are made of this alloy. Chemical transport, dairy and beer transport containers are just a few of those applications that use stainless steel alloy 304. Because it is more resistant to corrosion than 303, stainless steel alloy 304 also finds applications in a corrosive marine environment. Nuts, bolts and screws made of alloy 304 are ideal for this application because of its ability to resist wear.
