Stainless steel alloy 410 is highly desired as a martensitic stainless for a variety of applications including cutlery and cooking utensils. Many applications, such as gas and steam turbine blades, require a metal that with heat treatment can reach high mechanical properties. This stainless steel alloy has the ability to resist scaling and corrosion, while maintaining impact strength. This is especially evident with alloy 410 even at temperatures up to 1200 F. For machinability alloy 410 can produce tough chips and a heavy build up. It has been found to respond best when its condition has been heat treated or cold drawn. This is especially true when it is being machined with annealing. With pre-heating to avoid cracking, welding can be easily accomplished. Also, ductility will be best maintained if annealing is done following welding. The hot working temperature range is 2000 to 2200 F. For hot working, the temperature should not fall below 1650 F. Stainless steel alloy 410 responds well to most methods of cold forming and working. If annealing is employed it should be done at 1200-1400 degrees Fahrenheit. After annealing alloy 410 should be air cooled. SST-410 can be tempered and hardened. After tempering to the proper hardness either furnace or air cooling can be used. After hardening at 1750-1850 F, the material should be oil quenched to ensure the greatest degree of hardness. In addition to the applications mentioned previously, stainless steel alloy 410 is the preferred metal for buckets, valve components and bushings. It can also be found in fasteners and screens.
