Stainless steel alloy 416 is a chromium steel alloy that responds well to heat treating is easily machined and is always magnetic. It is also non-galling, and is, in fact, a free-machining stainless. As mentioned it is free machining and can be compared for speed and feed to some carbon steels. The optimal temperature for material heat treating is 200 F, however for best results cold drawn is best. Stainless steel alloy 416 also has good chip breakage during machining. Welding for SST-416 should never be considered. This alloy contains a higher percentage of sulfur than other stainless steel alloys. The sulfur makes this stainless alloy more porous. For hot working of alloy 416 the temperature should be maintained between 2100-2250 F. Be aware that cracking may occur should the hot working temperature fall below 1700 F. Cold working does not really work with 416, too much can produce cracking. For best results avoid more than the most minor of cold working. Annealing of alloy 416 can be done in two ways. For air cooling keep the temperature at 1200-1400 F. Furnace cooling at temperatures of 1500-1650 F will result in the most softness. For tempering of 416 one needs to be aware of the temperature range to avoid: 450-1050 F. Tempering in this range could cause lessened impact strength. It can also affect the corrosion resistance. For hardening alloy 416 should be done with an oil quench soak at 1700 to 1850 F. Some of the applications which require stainless steel alloy 416 include shafts, axles, screws, gears, nuts and bolts, pinions and screw machine parts.
