Steel Investment Castings

Versatility - Cost Effectiveness - Precision Dimension Control

Steel investment castings are the logical answer if one is looking for a cost-effective alternative to stainless steel castings. Steel precision or lost wax castings are the choice of oil and gas, agricultural and automotive industries, as well as a number of others including valve and pump industries.

The reason for the lower cost of steel investment castings over stainless steel castings is the price of the nickel and chrome necessary to the process of creating stainless steel. Steel and stainless steel castings both are cost effective in that finished castings have a near net shape. This means there is very little need for extensive post-production finishing.

Steel Investment Castings Facts:

  1. Used for complex or intricate parts not suitable to machining
  2. Usually requires a certain amount of lead time
  3. Usually best for production rates that are low-volume
  4. Ideal where a smooth surface is needed
  5. Also the choice for tight casting tolerances
  6. Steel casting techniques utilize one of the following processes:
  7. Lost wax casting
  8. Soluble glass process
  9. Sodium silicate shell
  10. Complex shell process

Limitless Possibilities with Stainless

The mechanical properties of stainless castings are virtually unlimited. Post-production heat treatment can result in a metal piece that is not only durable but fabricated out of the hardest of all metals used in lost wax casting.

Another advantage to precision castings is that two separate pieces that might require welding can actually be cast in a single process. This eliminates possible failure due to a weld when the part is used for critical applications.
