Q: What alloys can be poured as an investment casting?
A: Shelmet pours over 100 different ferrous and non-ferrous alloys comprised of aluminum, copper base, cobalt base, nickel base, carbon steel, alloy steel, tool steel and stainless steel. Click here for our complete alloys and materials listing. Top
Q: What dimensional tolerance can be expected from a Shelmet investment casting?
A: The investment casting process is capable of producing exceptionally close dimensional tolerances over a wide range of alloys. Depending on the size and complexity of the part, a linear tolerance of +/- .005 inches, (.127mm) per inch is standard for investment casting. As a rule of thumb, the smaller the part, the tighter the dimensional tolerance can be held. Top
Q: What size parts can be produced in the investment casting process?
A: From a fraction of an ounce to over 10 pounds, there is virtually no limit to the casting size and complexity in our precision casting process. We are extremely skilled with highly intricate or detailed parts weighing 1/4 lb. or less. Top
Q: What type of tooling or pattern equipment is necessary in investment casting?
A: Typically, a split negative-cavity aluminum die is manufactured, from which the wax models are produced. In addition, ceramic inserts and soluble wax cores are used to achieve the desired configuration, depending on the complexity of the casting cavity. Top |
